Referring to award-winning motivational speaker Pegine Echevarria simply as “positive” would be an understatement, especially if you’d ever attended any of her amazing workshops and seen first-hand how the audience responds and hangs onto every inspiring and thought-provoking word.

The fiery speaker, known simply as “Pegine,” is a best-selling author who has devoted more than 25 years to inspiring women to take a lead role in the workforce and has inspired industry professionals on what it takes to be a phenomenal leader. Pegine is also no stranger to APA’s Payroll Congress as she has been a presenter for the past several years.

Attendees of the 40th Annual Payroll Congress had the opportunity to attend three of Pegine’s workshops during this year's Leadership Excellence Series. The series was an exhilarating journey that celebrated the unique traits inside each individual and how communication manifests success.

Professionally, I hope that participants received techniques to recalibrate within themselves, integrate with others live and in person, and build relationships that will support them at their workplace and professional careers,” she said.

This year’s Payroll Congress workshop sessions included the following:

“Making Friends in Your Leadership Network”—This session was held on May 12 and focused on the loneliness that can often come with leadership, and why leaders need to seek out and foster friendships with fellow leaders.

During this workshop, participants gained skills to “deepen their connections with peers and leaders,” Pegine said. “Growth is accelerated by who you know and can confidently ask for advice or gain support.”

“Refortify, Revisit, and Regroup in Business and Life”—This session took place on May 12 and challenged leaders to take a good look in the mirror, to look deep within themselves and rediscover those values that define what they truly stand for.

In this workshop, “we looked at the values you want to embrace and that are essential for the new world,” Pegine said.

“Build A Can-Do Attitude: I’ve Got the Power, She's Got the Power, We've Got the Power”—This session, which took place on Friday, May 13, challenged leaders to not only create a culture that screams: “Yes, we can,” but fosters leaders to ride the wave of momentum within their organizations.

This workshop had attendees practice and learn “charismatic, supportive, and engaging techniques while building a positive workplace culture,” Pegine said.

Pegine added that payroll professionals everywhere have seen a lot of changes in their industry since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, and that it’s time to embrace what worked, evaluate what they want for the future, and decide how to implement the processes, values, and ideals they want for their organization.

You are a payroll professional and a leader; this is your time for evaluation, application, and innovation, and it begins with every payroll professional,” she said.
