What were your thoughts when you were asked to serve on the Board of Advisors?

To be honest, my first thought was, “How cool is this?” I couldn’t wait to show my family and coworkers the letter asking me to serve on the Board of Advisors. It has been a privilege to serve, and I am thrilled by the experience I have gained and the connections I have made through this process. I hope my service to Region 6 has been as rewarding to the chapter leaders as it has been for me.

What are some of the struggles you have experienced and overcome as an Advisor?

I would say the biggest struggle is figuring out how to effectively gather everyone together. How do you bring so many leaders together at the same time and how many meetings are too many before they lose their effectiveness? I believe we have struck a balance, but it was a concern of mine during my first year serving on the board.

What advice would you like to give to the chapters in your region?

The best advice I can give is to stay connected and stay active. You will be amazed at the connections you make that start small but grow to be monumental. The people you build relationships with can be lasting friends as well as connections to job opportunities, volunteer opportunities, and great payroll knowledge.

What question do you get the most from your region and what is your response?

I get a lot of questions from people who are looking for chapters and ways to be involved.  It is exciting for me to be able to point people in the right direction for success and networking.

What do you like most about being on the Board of Advisors?

I love connecting with the chapter leaders in my region.  Our collaborative efforts bring great ideas and solutions to each other, and I love seeing what we all can come up with!  I love travelling to the Summer Board Meetings to have the opportunity to connect with the APA Board of Directors on a more personal basis and benefit from their knowledge and experience.

What were you surprised to learn about the chapters in your region?

I originated from a much smaller chapter than some of the chapters in Region 6, so I was mostly surprised to see that we share some of the same struggles. We have been able to relate and exchange ideas regarding issues like membership involvement and officer transitions.

It is great to see so many dedicated professionals that are passionate about the future of payroll.  I am very proud and honored to be representing such a wonderful group of chapter leaders.
