Crash Course: Chapter Pictorial Tutorial

Each year, APA chapters are invited to submit a photo pictorial showcasing their activities from the past year to be displayed on monitors during the Annual Congress. Chapters with the best pictorials are also recognized and awarded during the Chapter Exchange. Follow the steps below to join the fun and create your very own Chapter Pictorial:

  1. Create the Canvas

Once you have reviewed the contest flyer, open PowerPoint and create a blank presentation with a total of 10 slides.

  1. Plan the Layout

Decide what kind of photos will be featured on each slide. For example, you may decide to dedicate one slide to your Study Groups or one to National Payroll Week activities. Remember to include a title slide and closing slide. You can easily organize your layout by clicking on “Notes” at the bottom of the screen and typing in the category for each slide.

  1. Add a Background

When it comes to choosing a background, have fun and take artistic liberty! You can copy and paste a photo that covers the entire slide or simply pick an abstract background from the “Design” tab. Remember, the pictorials will be shown at the 37th Annual Congress so think about how you can incorporate the “Payroll Edge” theme into your overall pictorial design.

  1. Add the Basics

Once your backgrounds are done, add your photos and chapter name to each slide. Don’t worry about the formatting or style just yet. Focus on completing the basics first. You can add additional text as well, but keep in mind that each slide will only be shown for a few seconds. The example below contains pictures from the 2018 NPW Chapter Photo Contest:

  1. Add the Flair

Now it’s time for the fun part! Arrange your photos, adjust the font, and add design elements to make your chapter pictorial truly spectacular. You can explore effects by selecting a photo and clicking on the “Picture Tools” tab. If you’d like, try adding transition effects between slides. Just make sure that no sounds or music are included and your text can be easily read (sometimes changing the font color or adding a shadow will do the trick).

  1. Submit on Time

To have your chapter pictorial included at the 37th Annual Congress and in the Chapter Pictorial Contest, submit your PowerPoint file through the Annual Chapter Contests page by Friday, March 1.
